A tender has been issued by Interpol looking for providers of “mobile biometric devices” to collaborate on biometric “matching” technology to aid law enforcement agencies.

The International Criminal Police Organization said it is willing to find one or more partners to procure devices that are capable of capturing multi-modality biometric data, such as iris scans, fingerprints and facial images, in the global mission to personally identify and apprehend offenders.

The use of biometric devices permeates through the travel sector, law enforcement under government authority to stop crimes or illegal migration crossing national borders, and has been the centre of Interpol’s 20-year strategy to digitalise tools and management systems for biometric data.

Today, the vast databases available to Interpol keep a useful record of crimes used to match with offenders again and assist border control officers. In addition, Interpol’s Integrated Border Management Task Force was established to assist EU countries in managing tight border controls and deploying advanced biometric tools.
